On A Night
It was on a night
such as this – red wine, blue jazz –
that I met him for the first time.
He came to me from
a dear friend’s recommendation
claiming to have drunk
the wine of unity needed
my bearings to be steady –
but unable to help – we both fell
into the deep, deep glass of wholeness
It was on a night
such as this – heated blood, cool heart
that I came across him
He entered my protected world
with an unarming force
claiming to reside in
the night river’s room, forever
abiding to the forces of the moon
and then he threatened to take
me into unknown eddies of
a whirlwind faith
It was on a night
such as this, hot movements, icy thoughts
that they encountered me
and we became the stony edifice
of a night well lived, lingering in love
and fostering life upon
the holy mountains covered
with the cedar forests; we purified
the night so that
the maligned moon could shine
bright again – merely by
purifying ourselves first.
